Cristina and Emily have been close friends since they met in New York and discovered their shared passion for hospitality, almost ten years ago. They knew then and vowed that if it the time ever came to open a restaurant, they would do it together. Cristina met the Spanish Jose during an internship at Can Fabes in Catalonia and the rest was – as the saying goes – history.

Outside the place looking in from the outside
Here in Portland, the Torta is the anchor of the expanded menu at the new brick-and-mortar Güero, Megan Sanchez and Alec Morrison's Northeast Portland sandwich shop. "It's beyond a regional specialty, it's a point of pride," Morrison says. "Jalisco is the beating heart of a lot of Mexican culture and heritage. It's the birthplace of mariachi, tequila, revolutionary heroes, and the ahogada is a huge deal there.

Out front of Industrial Saloon & Cafe
We saw this restaurant on 'DDD' and had to try it. Well, the trip to Portland was worth it. Went for breakfast - it lived up to the hype. I had the corned beef hash, my wife had the creamed chipped beef on toast. (It was killer!) They make their own corned beef - on premise - fry it in a small seasoned pan - it is great - comes out with a nice crust - a little bonus with a corned beef breakfast. The chipped beef - served over sourdough bread was, how shall we say - exceptional. It's gotta be made with whole cream. Rich. But, oh so good. If you are in NW Portland - give it a try. Two nice hotels within 3 blocks - and, as we discovered - NW 23rd Ave. (only a few blocks away) is full of boutique shopping and restaurant choices (re: Indian, French, Mexican, comfort food). We had dinner the night before our breakfast destination at Besaw's - it's been in business for 110 years. We will be back - there is way too much yet to be discovered in this neighborhood.

Swiss Hibiscus opened its doors in 2010, but the legacy began long before in Wädenswil, Switzerland where Chef Martin Wyss was born. With a desire to travel, he chose cooking as his apprenticeship. He traveled the world, but, in 1964, rooted himself in Honolulu, Hawai’i after accepting a sous chef position with the then, Kahala Hilton Hotel. Chef Wyss retired after 18 years as the Kahala Hilton Hotel’s Executive Chef with the desire to open his own restaurant.

Guy Ate Here at Tails & Trotters
Inspired by the regional cured hams of Europe, Tails & Trotters is the Pacific Northwest’s first signature pork producer developed from pork finished on local hazelnuts. Tails & Trotters pork is mirrored after the famed Jamon Iberico from Spain; crafted from the Pata Negra, or black-footed Iberian pigs who roam the oak groves of south and southwest Spain feasting on acorns. Using the resources of this region, co-owner and founder Aaron Silverman substituted hazelnuts for acorns and the result was the development of a distinctive variety of Pacific Northwest prosciutto.

Tile Work Outside the front door - The Country Cat
At The Country Cat Dinner House & Bar, American craft cooking is truly at its prime. Adam and Jackie Sappington have masterfully created their unique interpretation of the country’s ever-evolving culinary heritage yielding a conversation-starting menu that highlights flavor profiles from Adam’s southern upbringing balanced out by classic Northwest styles. The cozy and soulful restaurant is nestled in southeast Portland’s rather unexpected Montavilla area, a family neighborhood reminiscent of Adam’s hometown in Missouri allowing the duo to foster a restaurant environment that serves the community first. The seasonally-focused menu represents the best local offerings from surrounding markets; in fact, 65 percent of their produce is hand-picked from the farmer’s market – it’s no wonder Adam can often be seen winding through the restaurant providing guests with a sample of the season’s first strawberries that then appear in various ways throughout their menus.

Guy Ate Here at The Original
In the 1950s and 60s, diners and supper clubs were social hubs, places we gathered to end our days or begin our nights. The menus were comprised of comfort foods brought to this country by the immigrants who shaped it, and were refined to satisfy contemporary tastes. The Original, the downtown destination for all-day Portland dining, renews that spirit for the 21st century by serving up playful variations on the classic standards in an atmosphere that’s stylish, sophisticated and cool.
