When I found myself rolling into Tallahassee, Florida, I expected the usual Southern charm—warm smiles, tall trees, and easygoing afternoons. What I didn’t expect was to stumble upon Backwoods Crossing, a restaurant tucked off the beaten path on 6725 Mahan Drive. This place isn’t just another stop along the highway; it’s a true culinary adventure. It even earned a spot on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, where host Guy Fieri gave it a well-deserved thumbs-up.

Walking through the doors, I felt like I was stepping straight into a friend’s cozy farmhouse. The atmosphere was casual, with wooden tables and friendly chatter filling the air. Most of the ingredients here come right from the nearby gardens and local farms. Fresh herbs, crisp veggies, and just-laid eggs aren’t special orders—they’re the daily routine. The flavors are clean, honest, and full of life, letting you taste Florida’s natural bounty with every bite.

I started with a plate of their seasonal produce, which changed on the chef’s whim, and I could really tell the difference between something shipped across the country and something harvested nearby. For the main course, I tried a tender piece of locally raised steak served with roasted vegetables. It was prepared simply, but that simplicity made the flavors shine even brighter.

What truly sets Backwoods Crossing apart, though, is the sense of community it creates. The staff is proud of what they do, and they’ll gladly tell you which farm your food came from or when the herbs were picked. It felt like I was more than just a customer—I was a guest invited into a family’s kitchen.

If you’re passing through Tallahassee and want a meal that’s down-to-earth yet full of flavor, Backwoods Crossing is worth the stop. It’s a reminder that good food comes from good soil, good people, and good care. After tasting the difference here, I promise you’ll never look at a roadside restaurant the same way again.
