Hammerheads in Louisville, KY
So, most foodies who think Louisville, KY, think Hot Brown. And while I love a great Hot Brown when I travel to Louisville, I recently found a new joint (completely by accident, I might add) called Hammerheads. Its totally Triple D caliber. Its in the basement of a house. A freaking house. And there's taxidermy of a shark on the outside over the patio. Really? That's commitment. But the attention to detail doesn't stop there. I was a little skeptical when we were walking in, but that place was packed. And the first aroma that hit my nostrils was truffle oil. At that point, I thought to myself "No dive that smells of truffles can be bad."My order...chicken and waffles. Yeah, in Louisville. Tender fried chicken that tastes like...well, chicken. And this is Kentucky. The Colonel would approve. The waffle, a slap me in the face sweet-potato waffle, with a generous side of warm maple syrup. Some of my cohorts got bison burgers on pretzel buns. Some got pulled pork or beef brisket tacos. Another got a bigger-than-your-face catfish sandwich. Top that off with a great selection of local beer on tap...its a killer combination. You gotta go. Hit a Hot Brown spot on the way...whatever you have to do to justify the trip. But go get lost on the southeast side and hit up Hammerheads. You will not regret it. Take it from this fat kid.
