Mike's Clam Shack in Wells, ME
Dear Guy and Crew, I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to share a special memory with you that highlights the extraordinary experience I had at Mike’s Clam Shack during a memorable winter storm in December 2008. At that time, Maine was hit by one of the worst ice storms, and power outages affected much of the area. Remarkably, Mike’s Clam Shack remained open, becoming a beacon of warmth and comfort for the entire town. I had flown into Boston and made my way to Maine, where I was staying at the Waldo Emerson Inn, which also had power and fantastic food. I was five months pregnant with twins and had struggled to eat much throughout my pregnancy. However, the moment I stepped into Mike’s Clam Shack, I experienced something truly remarkable. Their clam chowder was, without a doubt, the best I have ever had. I was finally able to enjoy a meal, and it was such a relief and joy. What struck me the most was the kindness and generosity of the staff. They not only served incredible food but also opened their doors to the town and travelers like me, offering a place to escape the storm and enjoy a hearty meal. On a related note, the owners of the Waldo Emerson Inn had an emergency with their daughter, who was in labor with complications. Despite the circumstances, they made sure we had access to the inn, leaving us a key and allowing us to make ourselves at home. Given that I was pregnant with twins, they even let me have free rein of the kitchen to get what I needed, no matter the hour. Their homemade granola was particularly unforgettable. It’s worth mentioning that I was living in Ramona, California at the time. I recall you had visited the Ramona Cafe around 2007, which adds a nice connection to this story. Thank you for all the joy and inspiration you bring through your show. Your visits to local eateries and the way you spotlight remarkable places like Mike’s Clam Shack make a real difference in the food community. Warmest regards, Joy
