THE COVEN of WICHES in Brixton London, UK
Born out of frustration in the London (UK) food scene, a lack of sandwich options for Vegans prompted myself (chef Annabelle Clarke) to open THE COVEN of WICHES, the UK's only and best "666% Vegan" Dive Bar & restaurant selling a la carte big ass sandwiches made to order. During lockdown after a change of career, me and my husband drew BANG (celebrated audio engineer for band like U2 and Royal Blood) sat at home watching a LOT of Triple D. Inspired by the lovelies at Herbivorous Butcher on the TD episode, starting a vegan business and filling a niche in London seemed more probible than possible, that positivity and energy is what led to THE COVEN of WICHES. The Coven is a safe space for all walks of life, the concept is a feminist rhetoric, taking the gender slur of "Witch" and turning it on its head as a play on words for us making "wiches" and also to repurpose the term as an empowerment of female autonomy as a proudly female owned business. We're both massive fans of triple D, we've connected with Herbivorous Butcher on instagram and bonded over the connection we have. We're loved all over the UK and have folks traveling from around the globe to come to us. Mostly to try our Reuben which folk have said is better than Katz's!. We're lauded as the best at what we do in London but frankly are low key ousted by the greater sandwich and culinary scene for simply being Vegan and doing "just sandwiches". The UK sandwich culture is still young and the struggle is real. We'd love Guy and Hunter to come through, it'd be a complete manifestation of what we've built, where it came from and would frankly serve to legitimise everything we're about. Long Live Flavo(u)rTown!
