"Two places you really need to check out"
Two places you really need to check out the next time you are in the Jacksonville, Florida area. "V" Pizza is a small local chain the specializes in true Naples style pizzas, with everything except the water imported from Italy (including the wood fired ovens). What they produce is fantastic, and the vive is pure local. The pizza PICCANTE (Sausage, Sopressata,, calabrian chili pepper paste, fresh mozzarella, San Marzano tomato sauce, and basil) has the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and spicy. The PIZZA ALLA DI POLLO (V’s Chicken Wing Pizza) has Marinated Chicken (fresh lemon, rosemary, fresh garlic, extra virgin olive oil), caramelized onions, gorgonzola and fresh mozzarella. And yes, the wings are done in the pizza oven for a roasted/grilled note. Mandarin location has the Hopgarden with a wide variety of local craft beers and a nice selection of imports (Steigel and Magners). The other small local chain is Maple Street Biscuit company (Filmed for Guilty Pleasures). Their fried chicken biscuit with Bissel Family maple syrup and bacon puts the Metro Diner's chicken and waffles to shame (and thats saying a lot!). Their Squawk on the street (chicken biscuit with goat cheese and house made pepper jelly) and the garden Bird (chicken biscuit with collards and local hot pepper sauce) are also spot on. The fresh made biscuits are that perfect southern style biscuit, but light as the flaky traditional biscuit. They also serve coffee roasted at the Julington creek store by a one man operation (Red Leaf Roaster).
